This article briefly introduces the common hydrogen production methods in Chengdu.

1. Hydrogen production from coal

Hydrogen production from coal gasification is characterized by long process, high investment, relatively complex operation, relatively cheap raw materials and cost advantages. The main process flow is that coal or coal char reacts with pure oxygen and steam to obtain gas with H ∈ and CO as the main components, and then obtains hydrogen with a certain purity through gas purification, CO transformation, H ∈ purification and other production processes. The initial investment of coal hydrogen production unit is relatively high, so large-scale hydrogen production is required to share the depreciation pressure. The larger the scale, the more obvious the cost advantage. At present, the scale of domestic coal hydrogen production plants is usually tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of standard cubic meters per hour, with investment ranging from hundreds of millions to billions. Coal based hydrogen production has a large amount of waste water, waste gas and waste residue, and large investment in environmental protection, so it is generally used in chemical production to transfer carbon to chemical products to reduce carbon emissions; If hydrogen is produced separately, about 19-29kg of CO ∈ will be produced per kg of H ∈. Considering that the carbon trading price in Beijing in 2018 is 50 yuan/ton, the cost of hydrogen production will increase by 1-1.5 yuan/kg. In addition, there are many impurities in the hydrogen production from coal, so the requirements for purification devices are high, thus raising the total production cost.

2. Hydrogen production from natural gas

Hydrogen production from natural gas is characterized by short process, low investment, relatively mature technology, stable operation and environmental friendliness. However, the cost of raw materials is high, and the cost of hydrogen production is greatly affected by the price of natural gas. The main process flow is as follows: natural gas and water vapor are reformed to produce synthetic gas with the main components of H , CO and CO , and then hydrogen with a certain purity is obtained through the production process of CO transformation and H  purification. Hydrogen production from natural gas is an environmentally friendly process path in hydrogen production from fossil energy, so hydrogen production from natural gas is also the main source of hydrogen. However, due to the relative scarcity of domestic natural gas resources and high prices, large-scale promotion is difficult. From the perspective of carbon emission, every 1kg of hydrogen produced through the natural gas hydrogen production process will emit 10.86-12.49kg of carbon dioxide, which is far lower than the coal hydrogen production process. If a high carbon tax is levied, the cost of domestic natural gas hydrogen production is expected to be lower than the cost of coal hydrogen production.

3. Methanol to hydrogen

Methanol hydrogen production has the advantages of flexible scale, low investment cost, low carbon emissions, and easy access to raw materials. In China, methanol steam reforming process is mainly used to produce hydrogen from methanol, that is, methanol and steam reforming are used to produce synthesis gas with the main components of H ∈, CO, CO ∈, and then CO transformation and H2 purification are used to produce hydrogen with a certain purity. The investment cost of methanol hydrogen production is low and the production scale is flexible. The investment amount of the same scale is about 1/10 of that of coal to gas and 1/3-1/2 of that of natural gas to hydrogen. The carbon emission of methanol hydrogen production mainly lies in the process of methanol production. If the carbon emission of methanol production is not considered, the emission of methanol hydrogen production is equivalent to that of natural gas. As a bulk chemical raw material, methanol has a long-term and stable supply channel, so methanol hydrogen production has a large user group in China.
